During the 1920’s, the Prohibition was put into effect in the United States of America. Millions of American citizens were not happy with the implementation of the Prohibition, or as many called it, the Dry Law. Suddenly, Americans found themselves living in a country where the manufacturing, exporting, importing and sale of alcoholic beverages were illegal. This law that many individuals and groups in America criticized actually had a great effect in Tijuana, Baja California’s tourism and economy.

Suddenly, the little Mexican municipality of Tijuana, situated at the north western most region of the Baja California Peninsula and directly adjacent to San Diego, was flocked by wealthy and alcohol-thirsty Americans who want to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages legally. As decades passed, Tijuana developed a reputation for being a nightlife hot spot.

Many consider Tijuana most alive during the night. Even before the sun completely sets, Tijuana’s hundreds of clubs, discotheques, pubs, bars, saloons and taverns are already opening their doors to the thousands of tourists and locals in search of a good time. Tijuana’s prime time party hours are between 10pm and 4am. However, because of recent laws passed, some bars in Tijuana serve alcoholic drinks until 2am only. These bars and clubs can be found strategically located near night time tourist destinations like the greyhound racing tracks and the cabarets.

Surely the Avenida Revolucion (also known as the Revolution Avenue) is unrivaled when it comes to Tijuana’s nightlife scene. This long Mexican street is lined with bars and clubs of all sorts so club hoppers usually just walk its entire length when looking for the next place to visit because the clubs are so near each other. Popularly patronized bars in the Avenida Revolucion are the Hard Rock Cafe, Margaritas Village, El Torito Pub, Iguanas Ranas, Safari, Tequila Sunrise and the Caves. Endless tequila shot contests, beautiful women riding mechanical bulls, and intense salsa beats are what many Tijuana bars in the Avenida advertise in order to attract more customers.

More discerning tourists and locals wanting a piece of Tijuana’s bustling nightlife opt to go the the Plaza Fiesta instead of bar hopping in the Avenida Revolucion. The Plaza Fiesta is a large block featuring colonial Mexican architecture and decorated with fountains and sculptures. It is also near popular tourist destinations such as the Tijuana Cultural Center and the Avenida Independencia. Aside from bars and dance clubs blasting anything from Techno to Latin music, the Plaza Fiesta also has some late night restaurants and boutiques.

The infamous Zona Norte or North Zone (sometime referred to as La Coahuila because of the name of its main avenue) is also a busy district in Tijuana during the night. Tijuana’s Zona Norte is one of the many places in Mexico where prostitution is legal. This red light district is lined with brothels, strip clubs, gay bars, cabarets, adult bars and massage parlors that are subjected to certain government regulations regarding its operation and sanitation.
