Tijuana city is the capital and largest city of the Mexican municipality that goes by the same name. The municipality of Tijuana is found on the north westernmost portion of Northern Baja California (which is locally called as Baja California Norte or simply Baja California).

The city of Tijuana is popularly dubbed as North America’s corner city because of the fact that it is located at the north westernmost corner of the Baja California Peninsula, at the southwestern corner of San Diego County, and at the eastern corner of the vast Pacific Ocean. Aside from being called a corner city, Tijuana is also known as the gateway to Mexico because of its close proximity to San Diego. The distance between these two cities of two neighboring countries is a mere 18 miles, which can be bridged by a ridiculously short 25-minute drive.

At the southern edge of the municipality of Tijuana can be found two other Baja California municipalities, the municipality of Ensenada and the Playas de Rosarito municipality. If you exit Tijuana from the east, you will find yourself in the neighboring Mexican municipality called Tecate. Starting from west to east, the municipalities of Tijuana, Tecate and Mexicali are the three Mexican municipalities that are located along the international border between Mexico and the United States of America.

The municipality territory of Tijuana encompasses a group of islands called the Coronado Islands. The Coronado Islands are made up of four islands, all of which are uninhabited because the complete exposure to coastal winds and waters has left the islands barren and unfit for living. However, there are a few reptiles, snakes and flocks of birds that are endemic to the islands, as well as many species of marine life and plant life in the surrounding waters of the Pacific Ocean, so that the Coronado Islands see its fair share of visitors everyday.

The two natural landscapes commonly seen in Tijuana are very contrasting. On the western side of Tijuana, tourists and vacationers can enjoy the sights of coastal areas where soothing golden-yellow beaches, swaying palm trees and the blue-green waves are always part of the view. While desert landscapes all around Tijuana feature sloping sand dunes, vibrant desert blooms, and rows of telephone wires that seem to stretch as far as the eyes can see.

From a high vantage point, the western side of Tijuana where the Pacific Ocean is located seems like an endless blue flatness. While on the eastern side of the municipality, the towering mountain ranges of the Baja Peninsula can be seen stretching all the way from the border to the tip of the peninsula.
