Tijuana is a municipality of Mexico which is located at the Northwestern portion of the Baja California Peninsula. Many call Tijuana a corner city because of the fact that it is found in the corner of three significant areas: the Pacific Ocean, the Baja California Peninsula, and the city of San Diego, California. Just like in all places in the world, the location of Tijuana dictates the type of weather it will have.
Many would describe Tijuana as having a Mediterranean climate. A Mediterranean climate is closely associated with the Mediterranean sea, which is located at the southern part of Africa, northern part of Europe, and at the western side of Asia. Italy, Spain and Greece are countries that are known for having Mediterranean climates. The big question is, how can Tijuana, a Northwestern American area that is not part of the Mediterranean Basin and is nowhere near the Mediterranean Sea, have a Mediterranean climate?
Mediterranean climate, aside from covering most of the places found in and around the Mediterranean Sea, is also experienced by those living in regions that are located in the western coasts of land continents (specifically those places found between the latitude 40° south and north of the equator). The southwestern part of Australia, the western portion of Africa, and central Chile in western South America are areas outside the Mediterranean Basin that experiences Mediterranean weather. Because Tijuana is found in the western portion of North America in the north latitude of 32°, it naturally experiences Mediterranean weather.
Tijuana’s hot dry summers and mild wet winters, like those in Greece, Italy, Chile and San Diego, are characteristic of Mediterranean climate. During the winter months of November until late May, Tijuana experiences a cool weather and the occasional downpours of rain. Winter in Tijuana is cold enough to require a light jacket or a sweater, especially from dusk until late in the mornings.
On summer however, hardly a drop of rain falls on Tijuana soil, making it a perfect beach get away. Tijuana’s beaches, especially the famous Playas de Tijuana, is flocked by tourists and vacationers from all over the world because of the crisp, warm weather and the cool, blue Pacific waters. Most local residents and tourists in Tijuana spend the hot summer months dressed in cotton shorts, shirts and sandals.
Unlike Greece and Italy however, that experiences very hot summers, Tijuana’s summer weather is relatively milder. This is due to the fact that the cool winds coming from the expansive Pacific Ocean is pulled towards the warmer atmosphere lingering over the central and eastern side of the North American continent where deserts and large masses of land are located. Tijuana can then benefit from its perfect location since the coolness coming from the coast directly passes over it unimpeded by any mountains.
Because of its great weather, Tijuana is it a perfect tourist destination all year round.
